YEA Update in relation to Covid 19
Following recent developments in Ireland in relation to Covid 19, ECO-UNESCO is making the following announcements. (Please note that these may be subject to change given the fast-moving nature of current events)
Young Environmentalist Awards
We have been impressed by the record number of submissions this year as well as the high quality and impact of many of your projects. We recognise the tremendous work you have put into your projects and the effort you have put in to your online portfolio submissions. We encourage you to continue with your projects as far as you are able. In turn, we intend to proceed with the programme to the best of our ability within the current constraints.
ECO-UNESCO will go ahead and select winners for YEA 2020. These are due be announced online on 21st May 2020. Winners will be selected based on their online submission as well as their Eco-Den presentations assuming that these go ahead. In the case that they do not, then selection will be based solely upon online submissions. Certificates, prizes and trophies will be awarded. We hope to celebrate your successes more fully at an event in the Autumn.
All groups who were selected as semi-finalists and invited to attend the Eco-Dens will have access to their Submission Folders until 3rd April 2020. Please let us know immediately if you are not able to access your folder.
ECO-UNESCO has regretfully postponed the YEA Regional ECO-Dens. We will continue to review the situation and will issue further communications on this.
We do hope to re-schedule the ECO-Dens for 27th April – 6th May with our booking system open on 20th April.
In order to minimise the impact on mentor and participant schedules when schools re-open, we intend to host judging panels in our ECO-UNESCO offices and conduct the ECO-Dens online, via Skype, Google Hangouts or similar services.
Obviously, this is highly dependent on unfolding events and a final decision will be announced no later than 20th April 2020.
FINAL SHOWCASE & AWARDS
Regrettably, ECO-UNESCO will not be hosting our annual Final Showcase & Awards Ceremony scheduled for 21st May 2020.
Instead we hope to host a Celebratory Event in Autumn 2020. We will send out information as soon as we can.
We regret that these decisions have been taken, however we feel that it is the appropriate response in the interests of protecting the wellbeing of all who would be attending these events.
If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to email us on
Is the competition still going?
Yes, ECO-UNESCO will go ahead and select winners for YEA 2020.
Can I update my Submission Folder?
You can make any changes you like to your submission folder until midnight 3rd April 2020.
After which time the judges will carry out a thorough review of your submission.
What happens if schools do not resume as planned?
ECO-UNESCO will select winners based on their online submissions only.
Will the Eco-Dens go-ahead?
This depends on whether schools reopen as planned. If schools reopen on or before 20th April 2020, then the Eco-Dens will be rescheduled for 27th April-6th May.
They all be conducted online (via Skype, Google Hangouts etc.)
Bookings will open 20th April 2020 and we strongly encourage you to make every effort to book a slot and prepare and practise your presentation.
How will we know if we have won an award?
Winners will be announced on our website and social media channels. You will also receive an email notifying you of all award winners.
Will the final event at the CCD on 21st May go ahead?
No. Regrettably this event is cancelled. We hope to schedule a Celebratory Event in Autumn 2020.
ECO-Den 2020 postponement notification
Due to the announcement made by the Taoiseach this morning 12th March at 11.30 am that additional measures to contain the COVID-19 virus are to be enacted from 6 pm this evening – these include the closure of all schools, colleges, childcare facilities & cultural institutions, and the cancellation of mass gatherings of more than 100 people.
ECO-UNESCO has taken the decision to postpone the Young Environmentalist Awards Regional ECO-Dens in the interest of protecting the wellbeing of all who would be attending these events. ECO-Dens were to take place on the following dates in the following locations:
Dublin18 March UCD
Dublin19 March UCD
Dublin 20 March UCD
Ulster 24 March Lough Neagh Discovery Centre
Cork 27 March UCC
Galway 30 March NUIG
Limerick 31 March Strand Hotel
Dublin3 April DCU
These measures are to remain in place, pending further review, until 29 March. Given the proximity of the Easter break, we hope to re-schedule the ECO-Dens for late April or early May. We will continue to review the situation and will issue further communications on this. In order to minimise the impact on mentor and participant schedules when schools re-open, we intend to conduct the ECO-Dens online, via Skype, Google Hangouts or similar services.
We encourage all groups to continue working on their projects. You will all receive another email in the coming days with a new link to allow continued access to your project submission folders online.
For those of you who have made the online booking for your ECO-Den slot, you will shortly receive a cancellation notification email. Once we have certainty and can re-schedule the ECO-Dens, you will be notified and the booking system re-opened for you to select a new slot.
We intend to continue with our 2020 Young Environmentalist Awards. We will keep you updated on the Annual Showcase and Awards Ceremony event which is currently scheduled for the 21st May – this may need to be adapted or rescheduled to a later date.
This year has seen a record number of submissions for the Young Environmentalist Awards, and our reviews to date has shown the quality of projects to be at an all-time high. Everyone at ECO-UNESCO deeply regrets this postponement, however, we look forward to engaging with you further at a later date.
The work of ECO-UNESCO will continue throughout this period, with some changes. We would encourage you all to follow us on social media where we will be posting regular updates from young people across the country as they continue to have their voices heard on environmental matters.
We feel that it is the appropriate response in the interests of protecting the wellbeing of all who would be attending these events.
